Well, Devoid has finally left windoze on a computer. My first two
Thinkpads got formatted right away. OS/2 and Geos were installed on them. I talk about this on my first Computing page. The development of media software on Win and Mac, and the absence of same on OS/2 prompted me to leave Win98 on my third Thinkpad, an i1412.
In August of 1999 my 365x was stolen from my hotel room in Miami, along with my Sony Mavica digicam. Those cuban whorehouse hotels are fun to stay in, but a little more caution in letting people know your possesions is apparently required. I was there for a week, and on the last day I returned from a Haitian Fete Champwel to discover the computer and digicam missing.
I called my homeowners insurance company about a month later and they sent me $1845. Kul. The i1412 cost $1400 and I haven't replaced the digicam. An extra hundred bucks took the memory up to 64 megs where it runs fine.
I was thus able to pay Opera for their win web browser. I use Opera on BeOs also.
So, I set out to discover how to render windoze less harmful. My first addition was
Enriva Voyager , a file manager descended from Dir Master for OS/2, which was a spiritual descendant of the Amiga directory/file manager programs. DirOpus is the last reigning king of Amiga programs like this.
98lite was my first actual discovery, as I had never looked into running windoze before. This is an absolute necessity for win98 users. It restores the 32 bit shell from win95, which is much faster. It is faster and does not have Internet Exploder tied into the system.
If you have misplaced that old win95 OS, I have archived the three files required
Here
I collected some dos versions of unix tools along the way and have archived them
Here. These include ls and grep
For editing you need
VIM, to supplement notepad. ViM stand for VIsual iMproved. A better VI in other words. I use it on Amiga, OS/2 and pcdos. It comes with BeOS also. It is free ware, with a reference to an orphanage in Uganda to which to make a donation if you wish to show appreciation. Just a little study of VI macros makes a lot of tasks much easier than with any other editor. Of course I use Gui editors as well. Like writing this right now.
For graphics there is a decent free program available at
Dada Ware This was an os/2 and win program which failed the market and the authors graciously are making it available for free. I use
PM View which is not free, but is definitely worth the money.
